This
Italian carved wood and gesso statue of Santa Maria della Grazie
from 1928 had 17 layers of paint covering the original surface,
including a layer of gold paint covering the entire piece. Often
well-intentioned but untrained church members volunteer to 'refresh'
the statues and this usually results in pieces that are garishly
painted, far removed from the original subtle finishes, making
the pieces look like caricatures.
