PAPER AND BOOK RESTORATION
We provide conservation
services for all varieties of media. We can handle small format flat
paper, and specialize in the treatment and stabilization of antique
documents, prints, photographs and maps. As with all the departments,
the paper lab employs a minimal approach to treatment, using only
reversible materials and techniques. Treatments include dry cleaning,
water washing, stain reduction & removal, tear repairs, loss restoration,
liquid paper pulp treatments, lining, adhesive removal, aqueous and
non-aqueous de-acidification, UV bleaching, humidification, flattening,
and in-painting.

An
early 20th Century painting by Alexander J. Drysdale, oil wash
on cardboard. The painting had heavy water staining and very
dark tide lines. The stains were successfully removed with wet
blotter poultice only, therefore not requiring the extremely
fragile paper to more aggressive treatments or over-painting
to disguise the stains. A conservative approach and under-cleaning
is always best.
