The New Orleans School of Art & Craft is the latest venture of art entrepreneur Blake Vonder Haar, the founder and director of The New Orleans Conservation Guild (opened in 1997), the Antique Frame Gallery (2001), New Orleans Art Supply (2005), as well as the hugely popular Bywater Art Market (2002).
New Orleans has had a long love affair with art and artists, and while there have been academic studies in Fine Art available in the city, there has been a real lack of instruction in Fine Craft.
The School of Art & Craft hopes to fill that void with classes in Mosaics, Metalsmithing, Jewelry Making, Sculpture, Stained Glass, Mixed Media, Printmaking, Puppet making, Papermaking, Bookbinding, Calligraphy as well as the more traditional media of Drawing, Watercolors, Acrylics, and Oil Painting at all levels. Several classes are designated for or appropriate for children and youth.
Classes can range from one day to 12 week classes. Some start as early as 9 am, but most are afternoon and evening classes. There is a large offering of weekend workshops and week long intensives on the schedule.
Classes will be held at 3620 Royal Street, in the historic Bywater district, 1 mile from the French Quarter. Plenty of free parking!
