PAINTING RESTORATION

We provide expertise in all types of paintings on various supports, including easel paintings on canvas, paper, panel, plaster, metals, as well as wall paintings and murals. Treatments can include stabilization, surface cleaning, the removal of discolored varnish, reversing previous restorations, lining, paint consolidation and conditioning, the repair of tears and punctures, cradling paintings on panels, filling paint losses, and expert retouching.

All treatments include photographic documentation of 'before' and 'after' work, and 'during' treatment photos are taken when appropriate. All work includes written examination report outlining condition, treatment recommendations, cost and time requirements.

Painting of unknown woman attributed to Adolphe Rinck, mid-19th century New Orleans. This large oil on panel was buried under layers of dirt, soot and discolored varnish. After cleaning, the painting reveals an incredibly vibrant palette and a magnificent depiction of the lace and ribbons on the collar, cuffs and bonnet.

Portrait of Jean-Baptiste LaBranche of Louisiana by Jean Joseph Vaudechamp, dated 1852. This magnificent portrait, previously unrecorded and undocumented, was recently discovered in the family of the sitter, reportedly hanging in the same place for the last 150 years. The painting was in remarkably good condition for its age, and is a direct result of the quality materials used by the artist and the care given to it by the owners.

Eighteenth century portrait of a military man with red sash. The painting has suffered from discolored varnish and surface dirt, as well as poor previous restoration. Cleaning the painting revealed the wonderful luminosity of the costume.

Before Treatment
19th Century Greek icon, having suffered from fire and extreme heat. The heat resulted in the moisture being removed from the gesso layer causing it to bubble and disintegrate in several areas. The painting was deaned and stabilized, the raised areas were relaxed, and losses were filled and inpainted.
